Before the Longlist

Now that submissions for The Bath Novel Award 2019 have closed, what happens next?

The next stage of the award process is to match entries with their best fit readers. We work with a handpicked team of professional readers who have a wide range of reading tastes. They include editors and genre specialists as well as former winning and shortlisted authors.

Once the matching process is complete, readers start voting for the novel extracts in their particular batch. All submissions are read “blind” with votes are cast individually in answer to the question: do this extract and synopsis make you want to read the full?

We don’t have a minimum or maximum number. Sometimes a small number of books dominate the readers’ votes; in other years the votes are widely spread resulting in a longer list. Longlists have ranged from 23 to 39 titles and we include every book we believe could win.

Each reader can also award one ‘golden vote’ to an entry a reader can’t stop thinking about or would especially love to read in full. Novels which attract one or more golden votes are automatically longlisted, alongside the entries which attracted the highest number of’regular’ YES votes.

When most of the votes have arrived we will tweet a selection of the YES vote comments @bathnovelaward. We’ll do this from June 17th to June 20th inclusively. Tweets will be searchable (or mutable) under the tag #BNA2019 and here are some examples from last year’s award:

Due to the volume of votes cast, we tweet only a representative selection of YES comments apart from golden votes which are all tweeted.

The Bath Novel Award 2019 longlist announcement will be posted on our website at noon BST on Friday 21st June with entrants emailed a prompt once the announcement is up. We don’t notify writers who have been longlisted beforehand.

The writers of the longlisted titles will then be invited to submit their full manuscript by 30th June 2019 for the final judging stages.

Best of luck to all, we can’t wait to read your work!
